Darren Barker vs. Jason McKay
Darren Barker beat Jason McKay [RTD 6/12 time 3:00]
Saturday 13th December 2008
International Centre, Brentwood
Broadcast Live ITV4
Darren Barker faced Jason McKay of County Down for the second defence of his Commonwealth Title at the International Centre in Brentwood.
Both fighters looked ready and determined from the opening bell, though it was Barker, who took the initiative, working from behind his jab and planting a right hand onto McKay. With McKay unsettled, Barker continued to attack and punished McKay’s loose guard with another right hand from behind the jab. McKay fought back in the second trying to put the first round behind him, increasing his work rate and showing greater determination. McKay was beginning to throw more punches and one left hand caught Barker whilst he was off-balance but this did not trouble Barker as fought back to hit McKay with two right hands. The precision and power of Barker was starting to take its toll on McKay whose right eye was starting to swell considerably.
Barker dominated in the fourth round with a hook countering McKay. With Barker opting for single punches instead of his usual combinations he landed a devastating body shot which hurt McKay and from this moment on it was just a matter of time before the bout would be over. McKay was looking tired and his earlier movement was all but gone, visibly slowing and posing no threat to Barker.
Barker continued to look for the finish, holding a strong guard whilst swinging wide hooks. The knockout sadly escaped Barker as Jason McKay retired at the end of round six, being pulled by his corner. With Barker victorious, closing 2008 on a high, he is now looking towards 2009 with the same determination and inspiration to move onto his next target, the European Title.
